Rhythms of Coexistence: Relational Time and the Future of Art & Technology

Machines can perform vast amounts of computation in an extremely short time, while humans need much longer to build trust and understand one another.

When humans and machines operate at different speeds, and their actions continuously shape one another, how do relationships gradually emerge?

In the exhibition Relational Time, Daito Manabe constructs a world that remains in continuous operation. The works are no longer fixed, finished objects, but dynamic processes in which different computational systems, environments, and audience behaviors intertwine, continuously accumulating and evolving over time.

For this opening-day talk, media artist #DaitoManabe, curator #JoelKwong, and #TsaiHungHsien, Director of the media art team Dimension Plus, will come together at Taichung Art Museum. Taking Relational Time as a starting point, they will discuss the possibilities of coexistence among art, technology, and the future, while exploring Manabe’s interdisciplinary, multifaceted, and continually evolving creative practice.

Artist｜Daito Manabe
An artist, programmer, and composer, Manabe creates works through music, computation, and audiovisual media, exploring how life, intelligence, and social systems emerge and evolve. He participated in the technical development, visual design, and lighting design of the Tokyo segment of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games closing ceremony, and has collaborated across disciplines with numerous musicians.

Curator｜Joel Kwong
An international media art curator, producer, and writer. She is currently Programme Director of the Microwave International New Media Arts Festival and founder of SIBYLS, an art and technology consultancy and production company. She has worked extensively in media art, technology-based performance, digital culture, and interdisciplinary collaboration for more than 20 years.

Moderator｜Tsai Hung-Hsien
Director of the media art team Dimension Plus, working across media art curation, artistic creation, international exchange, and education. He has curated and led various technology-art and cultural technology projects, and continues to explore the possibilities of art, technology, and future societies.
