【8/9_Herbal Scents: A Cooling Remedy for Summer】

For our August Daydream Writing session, we will begin with herbs traditionally used to cool the body in summer. From the perspective of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine shop, we will explore how different cultures have developed ways of coping with heat, discover cooling herbs grown from the land, and experience the scents of mint, Chinese mosla, eupatorium, and more. Participants will then make their own herbal sachets and find a scent that helps them live more comfortably with the summer heat.

Next, we will enter the exhibition rooms of Horizon Ablaze and encounter artworks related to herbs and ways of relieving heat. We will observe the works, reflect on the ideas explored in the exhibition, and record our experiences through colors and words. Through scent, writing, and drawing, we will create our own refreshing remedy for summer.

About the Instructors:

Chen Chien-jung / Picture-book Author
Chen Chien-jung enjoys documenting the small moments of everyday life through writing and illustration. Her published Taiwanese-language picture books include The Magical Chinese Herbal Medicine Shop, Obasan, Where Are You Going?, and A Literary Girl in Historic Bangka: The Writing Life of Huang Feng-tzu (illustrator).

We will step into the exhibition rooms and explore photographic works featured in the exhibition The Covenant of Dadu.

Through their lenses, photographers have documented Taichung in images, capturing the city’s streets and scenes of everyday life.

Beyond the moments framed in light and shadow, we will also read essays and poetry.

Through the perspectives of writers and poets, we will revisit stories of Taichung Railway Station and discover how the city has been portrayed in literature.

Finally, we will put our own memories into words. Using a two-line poem as our “developing agent,” we will bring into view the landscapes and moments through which we remember this city.

About the Instructor:
Hsieh Kun-hua’s poetry has received numerous honors, including First Prize in the Taiwan Literature Awards presented by the Council for Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Education Literary Creation Award. His fiction has also received major literary awards, including First Prize in the Historical Fiction category of the Global Chinese Nebula Awards and the Lin Rung San Literature Award. His publications include the poetry collection Cherishing Your Soul, the short-story collection A Boat without the Sea, and the scholarly work The Psychology of Dream of the Red Chamber.

【4/11_Re: Invitation of All Things】

In this workshop that weaves together art, reading, and writing, a poet will offer you a task—a line of poetry, or a gentle prompt to begin.

Through the lens of poetry, you may find yourself gazing at an artwork, lingering in a quiet corner of the architecture, or observing the subtle interactions between people.

As impressions and words begin to surface, you are invited to gather them and return—to write a letter.

The letter may be addressed to an artwork, to a moment in time, to someone, or to feelings that have yet to be named.

In the end, these letters may circulate among participants. You might receive a “reply” from someone else—
and perhaps, that is how all things respond to you.

About the Instructor

Wang Hsiao-Miao is a poet, lyricist, educator, editor, and music project curator, who also occasionally creates music videos. Her recent works include the poetry collection and digital music album Evil Innocence, as well as the picture book What Will Take You Away.
